SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:
PC/MS DOS V2.1 - 4.X
PKZIP(tm) v1.X by PKWARE, INC.
VIRUSCAN(tm) 6.3vXX or higher by McAfee Associates
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
This program was designed to be an intelligent front end
for PKWARE's PKZIP(tm) V1.X compression/archive utility. One
of the main objectives in writing this program was to reduce
the amount of user input required each time a file is ZIPPED
or UNZIPPED. This program in no way attempts to facilitate
EVERY archive convention offered by PKZIP(tm). Instead, it
offers a modest selection of power options that will be of
help to the average or intermediate user in their daily
telecommunication and archive activities.
***** INSTALL THE ZIP TERMINUS(c):
THE ZIP TERMINUS(c) operates most efficiently when
used in conjunction with a hard drive. You may also use
this program with 2 floppy drives or any combination of
hard and floppy drives. The minimum for operation is
TWO FLOPPY DRIVES or ONE HARD DRIVE.
PKZIP(tm) files needed are : PKZIP.EXE; UNZIP.EXE;
ZIP2EXE.EXE; PKZIPFIX.EXE
McAfee VIRUSCAN files needed: SCAN.EXE
ZIP TERMINUS files needed : ZTECHELP.EXE;ZTECDPF.EXE;
ZTEC55A.EXE;
MS/PC DOS files required : COMMAND.COM
- PAGE 4 -
HARD DRIVE: 1. Create one subdirectory for PKZIP(tm) and
THE ZIP TERMINUS.
2. Copy PKZIP(tm), ZIP TERMINUS and SCAN.EXE
files to the subdirectory.
3. Type the following lines pressing <ENTER>
after each:
c:
cd\
cd\terminus
ztec55a.exe
4. Press F5 to configure when you arrive at the
main menu. c: may be d: or any logical drive
where you have placed the TERMINUS files.
cd\terminus may be cd\utility or any subdirectory
on the drive where you have placed the TERMINUS
files.
------------------------------------------------------------
FLOPPY : 1. Format a blank data disk.
2. Copy PKZIP(tm), ZIP TERMINUS and SCAN.EXE
files to the disk. Copy your shell or file
utility to the disk if there's room.
3. You must copy COMMAND.COM to the disk.
4. Place your disk in Drive #A. Type the
following lines and press <ENTER> after each:
a:
cd\
ztec55a.exe
5. Press F5 to configure when you arrive at the
main menu.
NOTE: When using only floppy disks, operations may be limited by the
lack of free disk space. A hard drive is recommended. Also,
the TERMINUS disk must be in the BOOT drive.
NOTE: You MUST start ztec55a.exe from the directory where it is
located at. You must switch the active subdirectory
and drive to the TERMINUS files location before running
ztec55a.exe so that your previously saved CFG file can be
loaded in. TERMINUS assumes that the CFG file is in the
startup directory and drive.
- PAGE 5 -
***** CONFIGURE THE ZIP TERMINUS:
THE ZIP TERMINUS(c) may be configured from the main
program menu or any sub-menu while the program is running. It
is highly recommended that you configure your paths and
parameters when running the program for the first time. You
may use separate directories for the zipup and unzip process.
Designate different target directories if so desired. Take
your time and plan where you want the file action to occur
for each of the functions. Make sure that you save the
default parameters when you are done. Here is an explanation
of the program parameters:
THE TERMINUS PRGMS DIR: Location of the ZIP TERMINUS files.
PKZIP(tm) PROGRAM DIR: Drive and directory where
PKZIP(tm), SCAN.EXE, & THE
TERMINUS program files are located.
McAFEE SCAN.EXE DIR: Location of SCAN.EXE
ZIPUP FILE SOURCE DIR: The directory path that will
hold all files that will be
ZIPPED up.
ZIPUP FILE TARGET DIR: Directory path where the ZIP
file will be created. This can
be the same as the source path.
UNZIP FILE SOURCE DIR: This directory will contain the
ZIP file(s) that get unzipped.
UNZIP FILE TARGET DIR: Directory where all the files
that are extracted from the master
ZIP will end up. This can be
the same as the UNZIP FILE
SOURCE path.
DOS SHELL PATH & FILE: This parameter will describe
where the DOS Shell will be
located and the name of the
shell program. If you use
PCTOOLS XTREE or any other hard
drive manager just enter the
directory and the name of the
program that must be executed to
make your shell work. You may
even use the file COMMAND.COM if
no shell is available. When you
press <F3> the program control
will go to the file you specify.
- PAGE 6 -
ZIPUP FILE PARAMETER: THE ZIP TERMINUS comes with
-u as the default. This will
allow you to create and add to
ZIP files. You may change this
parameter to suit your needs.
Consult your PKZIP(tm) manual
for more information on ZIPUP
parameters.
UNZIP FILE PARAMETER: THE ZIP TERMINUS comes with -e
as the default. This will allow
all selected files within the
source ZIP file to be extracted.
VIEW ZIPFILE PARAMETER: The default is -vd which will
display all files inside the
master ZIP and sort them by
date, oldest to most recent.
SCAN.EXE PRG PARAMETER: Parameter options used with SCAN
for the VIRUS SCAN submenu.
ZIP/UNZIP --- PASSWORD: Place your choice of password
for ZIP scramble / unscramble
operation. No spaces or '-'
characters allowed.
***** FILE MANAGEMENT
You may jump in and out of THE ZIP TERMINUS, each
time copying, moving, deleting, etc. the files you choose.
Just press F3 at any menu. THE ZIP TERMINUS will suspend
operation while you are in your shell/utility. You can get
back to THE ZIP TERMINUS by using the EXIT/QUIT function
of your utility or by typing 'EXIT' at the DOS command prompt.
DO NOT attempt to go back to THE ZIP TERMINUS by re-launching
ZTEC55A.EXE instead of using your SHELL's 'EXIT' function.
PCTOOLS V5.5 & V6.0 was tested successfully with the 640K
memory model*. You may even specify COMMAND.COM so that you have
direct access to DOS. The ZIP TERMINUS program is very small and
does not reserve much memory for code and data(146k).
* It is reccomended that your system have 640K memory.
You will need this much memory if you plan to run PCTOOLS v6.0
N.R. full blown shell from THE ZIP TERMINUS. Other shells
need less RAM and will reduce the required memory reserve. See
page #10 on how to determine available RAM.
- PAGE 7 -
***** SPECIAL NOTE TO USERS OF PCTOOLS(tm) PCSHELL:
IF you add an entry to your application menu and run THE
ZIP TERMINUS from there, you should not experience any
problems. If you run ZTEC55A.EXE from the directory on your
hard disk directly by pressing return or clicking when the file
is highlighted and you have QUICK RUN 'ON' in your option menu,
you will have much less memory to work with.(about 200K less)
Turn QUICK RUN 'OFF' or add an entry to your applications menu
and run it from there. Also, it is not advised to run PCTOOLS(tm)
RESIDENT since this will eat up more memory needed for THE ZIP
TERMINUS and PKZIP(tm).
Do not alter your PCTOOLS configuration while you are in
the shell. Certain actions taken by the user while in certain
versions of PCTOOLS may prompt PCTOOLS to issue a SAVE EXIT or
CONTINUE prompt when you try to return to TERMINUS. Select
EXIT and do not SAVE your configuration. Use PCTOOLS to copy,
delete or move files. Always re-read the tree when you are finally
out of TERMINUS and back to the PCTOOLS PCSHELL!
***** MOUSE OPERATION:
The two button Microsoft Mouse hardware specifications
are supported by this program when used in conjunction with a
color display/card that supports the IBM CGA C80 standard.
The program's video mode auto-detect logic disables mouse
operation if a Monochrome Display Adapter is detected. Only
keyboard entry is functional in MONOCHROME video mode(IBM MDA
standard). Logitech and all other Microsoft Mouse compatible
mice should function properly. The program logic checks for
a 'connected' mouse. You should not experience any trouble
if your mouse is truly M.S. compatible, connected to the
serial port or buss card, and the mouse driver software was
installed prior to running this program.
***** DIRECTORY VIEWS:
You may view the contents of the ZIPUP SOURCE, ZIPUP
TARGET, UNZIP SOURCE and the UNZIP TARGET directories by
clicking the mouse button when the cursor is over the prompt
ALT-D on the top function bar in the right hand corner.
You may also press the ALT-D key combo to get the same results.
***** ZIPUP OPERATION:
This version doesn't default the file list for ZIPUP
operations as '*.*'. You MUST select a single file or a
group of files for a ZIP operation. The directory for ZIPUP
SOURCE files is the directory displayed when you are
selecting a single file. If you don't tag any files or forget
to specify a ZIP file name, an audible cue will sound. Be
careful......read the PKZIP(tm) DOCS. Plan your directory
PATHS and ZIP PARAMETERS cautiously!
- PAGE 8 -
Lists of files can be zipped in the following manner.
Click or press enter when the file(s) you desire to add to
the ZIP file are highlighted. Press <ESC> when you are
through. Press #2 and enter a name for the ZIP file you are
about to create. Select #3 and the list of files will be
'ZIPPED UP'. There is a 255 file limitation.
Menu option #4 allows you to delete any file within a ZIP
file. You may choose any ZIP file from SOURCE/TARGET dirs.
The files within the ZIP are then displayed. Choose one or
several files to delete and then proceed.
***** UNZIP OPERATION:
The main thing to remember here is that only the UNZIP
SOURCE directory is displayed for UNZIP file selection. You
may choose from those files with a '.ZIP' extension. If you
need to perform any file operations you should jump to your
SHELL and then EXIT when finished. A damaged file or one
that gives a PKZIP(tm) warning can be fixed by pressing F4.
The resulting file will be placed in the UNZIP source
directory. Read your PKZIP(tm) DOCS to find out how a 'fixed'
file is created/processed.
***** MAKE '*.EXE' OPERATION: (PKSFX)
This function will process '*.ZIP' files found in the
ZIPUPUNZIP directories. All '*.EXE' files will be left in
the selected directory. Use ALT-P to temporarily change the
ZIPUP or UNZIP directory location if the current value is not
acceptable. Use your SHELL if you need to jockey files around
to this or any other directory. The resulting '*.EXE' file
will be self-dissolving. Please read your PKZIP(tm) DOCS for
further information.
***** ZIP FILE COMMENTS: (-z)
There is only one type of comment operation offered in this
version of the ZIP TERMINUS. It is available in the ZIPUP, UNZIP
and MAKE SFX submenus. Press ALT-C and first select a directory
and then a file to place a comment on.
***** TEST ZIPFILE(S):
This option is available by pressing <F8> on the menu
bar. It will verify a zip file for checksum, etc. Use this
option if you have any doubts about a ZIP file after modem
transfer, a hard disk crash, etc. Version 5.5A will check
a single file, list of files, or all files in the Directory.
- PAGE 9-
***** PASSWORD PROTECTION:
Press <F9> to toggle password on or off. The password
protect mode garbles each individual file in the master ZIP
during the ZIPUP process. This is the only time that an
individual file or group of files can be password protected.
The master zip file, the file containing the individual files
you ZIPPED up, does not get the password protection. Only
the individual files within are protected. It is therefore
possible to construct a master ZIP that has some of it's
files password protected and others which are not. This can
be accomplished by adding one or several files at a time to
the master ZIP and toggling PASSWORD on or off as needed.
You can even have different passwords for different groups of
files within a master ZIP file. The use of password garble
protection has many uses in corporate inter-office E-Mail,
etc.
The password can be changed by pressing <F5> and
changing the password default parameter. Don't forget to save
your changes when you are finished so that each time you run
THE ZIP TERMINUS your first choice password will be loaded.
Unzipping a master zip file that has some or all of it's
individual files password protected is easily accomplished.
Toggle password on by pressing <F9> , make sure you have the
right password(press <F5> to change it), and unzip as you
would normally do. Make repeated passes if more than one
password was used for different groups of file(s). You can't
do any damage if you have the wrong password or the master
ZIP you have chosen doesn't have any password protected files
within.
IF you convert a password protected ZIP to an EXE file
you must use the correct password or the file will not self-
dissolve. Assume the file you created was TEST.ZIP and you
converted it to TEST.EXE. The password used was
'TERMINUS'. Typing the following from the DOS command line
will do the trick:
A> test.exe -sTERMINUS
Do not use the character '-' or include any spaces in
your password. PKZIP(tm) password protection is case
sensitive so be aware that upper and lower case characters,
i.e. 'Y' or 'y', are considered as being different.
CAUTION!: Remember your password when zipping up. There
is no way to unzip files in a ZIP file that are password
protected if you don't have the right password!
- PAGE 10 -
***** MEMORY AVAILABLE FUNCTION:
Memory available for SHELL launch or PKZIP(tm) operations
can be found by pressing CTRL-F key combination while in ANY
MENU or CHANGE DEFAULTS. Free memory for SHELL launch is also
displayed each time you press F3 to go to your favorite shell.
This is RAM memory not FREE DISK SPACE!
Memory free reported takes into account ALL programs im memory.
FREE reported when using DOS V3.3 and running THE ZIP TERMINUS
from PCTOOLS V6.0 non-resident is approximately 400K BYTES not
including pathfinder. This is sufficient to re-enter PCTOOLS V6.0 by
pressing F3 -DOS SHELL whenever it is displayed in the lower menu bar.
The SAME AMOUNT of FREE MEMORY should be reported when you
return to THE ZIP TERMINUS after using your SHELL. The amount
of MEMORY FREE will decrease if your SHELL or any another TSR does
not release all memory it previously claimed. Decreasing MEMORY
FREE will also occurr if you do not 'EXIT' your shell and,
instead, re-launch THE ZIP TERMINUS by executing ZTEC55A.EXE.
Doing this will eventually allocate all remaining memory so
that even THE ZIP TERMINUS will not work properly and you will
be forced to do a hardware RESET.
**** DIRECTORY PICK LIST:
A DIRECTORY PICK LIST is available when selecting directories
for ZIPUP or UNZIP target and source paths. The left mouse button
is the same as the <ENTER> key and the right button is equivalent
to the <ESC> key. Pressing <ESC> leaves the PICK LIST with no
changes made to the defaults. If you press <ENTER> while 'NEW ENTRY'
is highlighted you may select a new path. <D> = delete an entry.
There are a total of 15 PICK entries. You may continue to
enter new paths after the 15th spot is filled. Each new path
will then be placed at the END of the list and the FIRST
entry(#1) will be deleted to make room.
You may start from scratch simply by using your DOS SHELL to
delete/rename the file ZTEC55.PCK prior to running THE ZIP TERMINUS.
This yeilds the same effect as running the TERMINUS for the first
time since the pick file will not be created on disk until the end
of the first work session.
- PAGE 11 -
Starting from scratch with all entries in the PICK LIST
designated as 'NEW ENTRY' is easy. Press <ENTER> and the PATH FINDER
will be executed. 1) Select the drive you wish to scan. 2) Select
one of the displayed paths found on the drive that was scanned.
This selection now becomes part of the new pick list.
***** DELETE WITHIN ZIP:
Selective file delete WITHIN a ZIP.
***** TAG FILE(s) FOR UNZIP:
Choice of which file(s) within a ZIP to extract.
***** AUTOCHECK VIRUS SCAN:
You will need to have McAfee's SCAN.EXE program in the startup
or PKZIP(tm)/TERMINUS directory/floppy to utilize this function.
The AUTOCHECK function is available in the ZIPUP and UNZIP menus.
This function is turned on by pressing F8. All the files you select
to be placed into a ZIP file are first submitted to virus scan. The
ZIPUP process will be aborted if a virus is detected. You can bypass
this feature by turning AUTOCHECK off.(F8 toggles state). All files
that are UNZIPPED are also automatically checked for virus infection.
Please register SCAN.EXE with McAfee Associates if you use it with
the TERMINUS. NO files are virus scanned while processing recursive
ZIPs or during extract operations which restore paths. Default #12
sets the SCAN options. /MANY is ignored.
***** VIRUS SCAN SUBMENU:
Main menu select #4 activates the virus scan submenu. Here you
may scan entire subdirectories or logical drives for virus infection
using the McAfee Associates program SCAN.EXE . Please be advised
that you should use the EXTRACT submenu with the virus scan option
ON! if you wish to check ZIP files for virus infection. Default #12
sets the SCAN options. /MANY is ignored during subdirectory scans.
***** RECURSIVE ZIP/UNZIP:
Recursive ZIPs with embedded path information are supported
by TERMINUS in the following manner. V5.5A has some extra error checks
to make sure the operation is successful. The following conditions
must be met for recursive ZIPUP/UNZIP:
1. The SOURCE FILE LIST window must display -r, -rp, -rP
2. The ZIP TARGET window must contain the name of the ZIP
file you wish to create.
3. You may add as many other parameters as needed by altering
the default ZIPUP parameter in the DEFAULT TABLE. Do
not put -r,-rP,-rp in the ZIPUP PARAMETER default box.
Likewise, don't put -d or -D in the UNZIP PARAMETER
default box. An audible que will sound if you attempt
to ZIPUP or UNZIP with those parameter combinations.
You MAY put a -p or -P in the ZIPUP PARAMETER box.
4. ZIPUP SOURCE directory should reflect where you wish
the recursive ZIP to start.
- PAGE 12 -
5. SHORTCUTS: ZIPUP recursive - press CTRL-R followed by a
p or P. CTRL-R waits for a second key input. If you press
<ENTER> instead of p or P you will get -R only. The parameter
in all cases is displayed in the SOURCE FILE(s) window instead
of a filename. Press #2 and give a name to the ZIP file you
wish to create...you're ready to go!(press #3 for ZIPUP)
6. SHORTCUTS: UNZIP recursive - press CTRL-R and a -d parameter
will be displayed in the EXTRACT FILE(s) window. If you don't
wish the paths to be restored and only want the files UNZIPPed
then press SHIFT #8. (puts a '*.*' in the EXTRACT window)
If you wish to ZIPUP an entire floppy or hard drive which has
subdirectories, make the ZIPUP SOURCE directory the ROOT(i.e. C:\ ,
A:\ , etc.) Then press CTRL-R followed by a 'p'
The difference between -rup and -ruP is that the capital 'P'
will cause PKZIP to start the recursive ZIP in the ZIP SOURCE PATH
and proceed downward into that directory tree branch and stop. If you
wish to recursive ZIPUP only one branch of your directory tree then
you must specify the ZIPUP SOURCE PATH with the starting point and
PKZIP(tm) will ZIPUP that subdirectory and all below on THAT branch
if you use -ruP or -rP as a ZIPUP PARAMETER.
NOTE: You should not enter -r, -rP, -rp, or -d in the DEFAULT
TABLE if it is displayed in the SOURCE FILE(s) or EXTRACT
window.(audible que issued!)
REMINDER: ALL ZIPUP, UNZIP and VIEW parameters are set and changed
by editing the default table.(Press F5)
***** AUTHENTICATE VERIFY:
It has always been possible to utilize this PKZIP(tm)
feature(provided you have FULL PKZIP registration) by including
the -! parameter in your ZIPUP parameter list. However, with the
TERMINUS version 5.5A you can toggle the -! parameter on and off
by pressing CTRL-V while you are in the ZIPUP submenu. The -!
parameter is automatically sent to PKZIP(tm) when Authenticate is
on. A screen message, 'AUTHENTICATE ON!', will be continuously
displayed when the toggle is in the ON position.
Authenticate Verify adds a 'tamper check' on your original
files and assures the end user that the files he has UNZIPPED
were truly generated by the original author or source.
The Authentication Verification feature of PKZIP(tm) can
only be used if you have FULLY REGISTERED your copy of PKZIP(tm)!
- PAGE 13 -
***** AUTOMATED CURRENT PATH SELECT:
Each submenu has a 'change path' function which is
initiated when ALT-D key combination is pressed. You are
first given the choice of which path to change: ZIPUP SOURCE,
ZIPUP TARGET, UNZIP SOURCE and UNZIP TARGET. The PICK LIST is
then displayed after you make your selection. You may choose
from one of the PICKS on your list or choose NEW ENTRY. A list
of valid logical drives is displayed if you select NEW ENTRY.
Select which drive you want to search for a new path on. The
next screen displays all found paths/directories on the drive
you selected. Only those 35 characters or less with either normal
or hidden attributes are available for selection. The 35 character
limitation is imposed to help reduce possible command line overflow
errors during ZIPUP, UNZIP, SCAN, ZIPTEST, etc. operations. The drive
path scan will develop a list with a maximum of 400 paths/dirs
starting with the ROOT directories first and working in until the 400
limit is reached. This is usually good enough for most hard drives.
However, some users maintain monster file/dir inventories. Therefore,
a manual entry is provided for paths/dirs not found on the list.
These key strokes will produce the following results:
<PGDN> <PGUP> = Display next or previous window page.
<ENTER> = Selects highlighted path.
CTRL-E = Enter a path/dir not on the list
CTRL-N = Select new drive and path.
CTRL-P = Hardcopy print of the path list with stats.
CTRL-T = Creates an ASCII text file of the path list
in the ROOT directory of the drive that was
scanned.
<ESC> = Quit and return to submenu.
HINT: If you create an ASCII text file of the paths on your
drive while you are using the path find function you can
then use your word processor or text editor to create
additional PICK LISTs. Each list may have a maximum of
15 lines with each 35 characters max long.
***** NOTE: Changing a path with ALT-D while you are in a submenu
WILL NOT CHANGE THE DEFAULT value for that path. Changing a
path while you are in the CHANGE DEFAULT area WILL NOT change
the CURRENT PATH value.
***** DOS BATCH FILES:
This might be considered a function for intermediate to advanced
users. Some users of TERMINUS have constructed custom DOS BATCH
files which they use to perform a variety of functions like,
file copying & deleting, recursive ZIPs, etc. MAIN MENU selection
#5 allows you to select a DOS batch file and execute it right
from TERMINUS. This version of ZIP TERMINUS allows the user to
select batch files found on ANY logical drive and/or subdirectory.
Read your DOS manual for more information on DOS BATCH file syntax
and construction.
- PAGE 14 -
***** BULLETIN BOARD POSTING:
The preferred way to post THE ZIP TERMINUS on local bulletin
boards, Compuserve, PClink, America ONline, etc. is to upload
the original PKZIP Authenticated archive with the filename:
ZTEC55.ZIP
Keeping the filename as shown above will help all system
operators from getting duplicate files with different names. We
thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
